Their sexual encounters after this follow a similar pattern, with Elena wanting to hurt Allegretto in some way, and he inviting her to do so. kinsalr
There was plenty of excitement, intrigue and mystery to keep one reading. But at that point Kinsale rapidly leaves the usual romance orbit.
Her achievement in making the listener care about a man without conscience, without heart, and, given his status as an ex-communicate, without a soul, is nothing sort of masterly. An assassin with revenge on his mind as a romantic hero is not something I find in my novels often or ever, or a hero who kidnaps the heroine to use her in his revenge plan, but Laura Kinsale made it work.
His interpretation of Elena works very well, too, with her progression from girlhood to maturity being marked by subtle changes of tone and a growing confidence in her speech. This, she decided, was pushing her luck. At the close of the book, having saved the republic from its last external threat, like all good romance heroes or heroines, he leaves, to give Elena a better chance to rule.
Shadowheart
I'm unsure how to feel about this novel. I really enjoyed the story of redemption of Allegreto.
Write a customer review. We were given no reference point from which to understand the flowering of the relationship between Elena and Allegreto, other than the point at which they came together to draw blood. She did the best to take control of the situations she found herself in, she made tough decisions that didn't really make her happy for the good of her people, she didn't let herself be walked all over.
The whole bdsm thing was so cringeworthy especially as it felt like he was reliving his childhood abuse at the hands of his monster father. She wants Allegretto too. I haven't read the condensed version at the end but I assumed that the condensed versions were the same books but with more modern language so I wasn't quite sure whether that was needed in this case. Shadowheart (Medieval Hearts, #2) by Laura Kinsale
I understand that there was some degree of controversy when the book first came out which mostly related to the unconventional sexual relationship between Allegretto and Elena. My previous attempt to read Kinsale ended in a quick DNF, so this three-star read is a definite improvement. She is an excellent writer and is on many favorites lists but just not my personal style.
Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers. Il Corvo is none other than Allegretto della Navona, the same man who rescued Elena from the Riata over a decade previously, and who now intends to use her to stake his own claim to the throne of Monteverde. You'll miss things if you don't. Once I was able to get all the way through it, I found it to be a very satisfying read. Allegretto is utterly captivating, despite the terrible things he has done, his wicked past, and his dark thoughts.
The bastard son of Gian Navona, he was taught to kill at a young age and put to work as an assassin. Her godmother, the Lady Melanthe, has arranged her marriage to Franco Pietro, the head of the Riata family as a way to end the strife that is tearing Monteverde apart.
All of that within a week. The transformation of year old innocent Elena is also quite abrupt. Laura Kinsale's books are always shhadowheart. I loved the book. I read a lot of romance and much of it doesn't stick with me, but I'm still thinking about this book after finishing it. Elayne goes from simply spunky to genuinely courageous. I read it for a challenge and forced myself not to quit.
He has never known love or affection — at sixteen, everyone around him knows what he is and what he is capable of — and they are terrified of him.
